In general, an SME is defined to be an enterprise employing less than 300 personnel and of varying size, sector and type. As of 2006, the number of SMEs in Korea is approximately about 3 million, including 84,000 medium enterprises(with 50~300 employees), 230,000 small enterprises (with 10~50 employees) and 2.68 million micro-enterprises(with less than 10 employees).
As the main component of the Korean economy, SMEs represent 99.8% of the entire enterprises (3 million SMEs), and 86.5% of total employment (10.41 million employees).
